In contact with air, silver naturally forms a silver oxide or tarnish. Moreover, textured surfaces of any material can become dirty especially if worn on skin which carries a perfume. To look good, jewellery should be clean and, for polished surfaces, bright. The following methods can help you keep your silver and gold looking at their best:- Silver Cleaning Cloth; Silver
Dip; Opals! Remember that some stones are fragile, especially opals, which contain water to give them their sparkle. Let them get very dry or too wet and they can be spoiled - so never try to clean jewellery with opals by an immersion treatment. (See this site for more information). Silver Cleaning Cloth - the easiest. Can be bought at any hardware store. Just rub over the piece. Silver Dip - very easy and effective for textured surfaces and getting where you can't rub. Always rinse in cold water. Again, widely available. Foaming cleaner - this red compound, including rouge, works well where some mechanical cleaning is needed. It comes from hardware stores and some stores stock their own brands. It can be applied with an old tooth brush, and washed off. Alternatively try Walsh's. Fibreglass brushes - give a sparkle to textured items where fine abrasion is appropriate. The brush is not widely available, but is very easy to use and I can refresh items which I made for you. To purchase your own, you could do so from Walsh's in Hatton Garden. Ultrasonic baths - shake dirt out of jewellery of all kinds. Again, I can revive jewellery which I have made for you, but you will probably find that your local jeweller has an ultrasonic bath in which he would clean your items for a modest fee.
Barrel Tumblers, for polishing - where a
high shine is wanted. This also requires special equipment.
I can re-polish the pieces which I make for you, but this equipment
is not widely available.. |
